Kanha National Park — The Emerald Forest
Kanha National Park spans 2,074 sq km across Mandla and Balaghat districts in Madhya Pradesh. It is one of India's largest and most celebrated tiger reserves, and the park that inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book alongside Pench. Kanha is globally famous for saving the Hard Ground Barasingha (swamp deer) from extinction — a conservation triumph that stands as one of India's greatest wildlife success stories.

Pench National Park — The Jungle Book Forest
Pench National Park spans 1,180 sq km across Seoni and Chhindwara districts in Madhya Pradesh, extending into Maharashtra. It is widely believed to be the primary setting for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book — the forest of Mowgli, Baloo, and Shere Khan. Pench is renowned for the Big 5: tiger, leopard, sloth bear, Indian gaur, and spotted deer, and for occasional sightings of the elusive melanistic (black) leopard.

Tiger Sightings — Kanha vs Pench
Both parks offer excellent tiger sightings, but Kanha's larger meadows (maidans) make tigers easier to spot and photograph. The open grasslands of Kanha — particularly the Kanha and Kisli meadows — are among the best tiger-viewing habitats in India. Pench's teak forest is denser, making sightings more dramatic but sometimes briefer. For first-time tiger safari visitors, Kanha's open terrain is more rewarding.

Wildlife Beyond Tigers
Choose Kanha if you want to see:
- Hard Ground Barasingha — found nowhere else on Earth in the wild
- Large herds of spotted deer (chital) and barasingha in open meadows
- Wild dogs (dhole) — Kanha has one of India's largest dhole populations
- Gaur (Indian bison) in large herds
- Sloth bears in bamboo groves
Choose Pench if you want to see:
- Leopards — Pench has exceptional leopard sighting rates
- The melanistic (black) leopard — rare but recorded in Pench
- The Pench River and its birdlife (over 285 species)
- A more intimate, less-crowded jungle safari experience
- The authentic Jungle Book landscape
Landscape and Atmosphere
Kanha feels grand and cinematic — vast golden meadows at dawn, sal forests stretching to the horizon, and the sense of being inside a David Attenborough documentary. Pench feels intimate and literary — dense teak canopy, the sound of the Pench River, and the unmistakable feeling that Mowgli could appear around the next bend. Both are extraordinary. The choice often comes down to what kind of jungle experience you are seeking.
Can You Visit Both?
Absolutely — and APE recommends it. Kanha and Pench are approximately 4–5 hours apart by road. A 6–7 night itinerary covering both reserves is one of our most popular packages. Choose Kanha if: this is your first tiger safari, you want the best chance of seeing tigers in open terrain, or you specifically want to see the Hard Ground Barasingha. Choose Pench if: you want a quieter, more intimate jungle safari, you are a serious leopard or bird photographer, or you want to walk in Kipling's footsteps. If you can do both — do both.
